Walter "Fred" Sherman - age 83 of Lathrop, MO passed away Monday morning, July 25, 2022, in Cameron. Fred was born on March 13, 1939, the son of Walter and Betty (Dunham) Sherman in Big Spring, TX. He graduated from high school in 1957, at Lake Charles, LA. He grew up in Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana. He was married to Ethel Merchant on February 26th, 1966, and to this union, two children were born. He later married Barbara (Morris) Fly on March 14th, 1980, at the First Baptist Church of Lathrop. He served in the United State Air Force during Vietnam. Following his service he worked for Beech Aircraft, TWA and Mobay, before a long career with BP/Amoco as an instrumental electrician. Fred and Barbara made their home in Mandan, ND, from 1982 to 1999, until moving back to Lathrop. He was a member of the Lathrop First Baptist church. He enjoyed farming, working on his computer, his John Deere tractor, tinkering, Nascar, and racing street stock cars. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, and step-grandson, Andrew Grant. He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Lathrop, MO; children, Sandy Scalf of Coon Rapids, IA and Bill Sherman of Lathrop, MO; step-children, Donald Fly (Gloria) of Lenexa, KS, Deanna Grant (Steve) of Hamilton, MO, and Dwight Fly (Laura) of Lathrop, MO, Debra Goldstein (Harvey) of Grape Vine, TX; grandchildren, Niccolle Sherman and Anna Magnusson (Stefan); step-grandchildren, Matt Grant (Kristin), Lindsey Rothove (Jeromy), Molly Lund (Trey), Paige Grant, Derek Fly, Danielle Cleek (Jake), Evan Gipson (Brock), Max Goldstein, Adam Goldstein, Christina Rodden (Greg), Caitlin Hachinsky (Blane) and Cara Hattock (Jake); 22 great-grandchildren; siblings, Sam Sherman (Sandy) of Casper, WY and Charlotte Rogers (Harold) of Wadesboro, NC; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members also survive.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Lathrop First Baptist Church Building Fund in care of the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the Lathrop First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one-hour prior to the service at the church.
