Sue Elizabeth Downey

Sue Elizabeth Downey, age 84, of Gallatin, MO passed away Friday afternoon, April 10th, 2020 at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, MO. Sue was born on September 6th, 1935 in rural Daviess County, Missouri, the daughter of Bonnie Harold and Katie (Parker) Downey. She was baptized at a young age. Sue was a 1953 graduate of Gallatin High School.  She worked for Inter-County Telephone Company, The Bank of Gallatin, and Missouri Telephone Company.  Sue was a devoted member of the Gallatin First Baptist Church and always could be found in her self-assigned seat in the back row.  She was active in the Daviess County Businesswomen Association, Gallatin Garden Club, Gallatin Quilt Club, and the GHS Alumni association.  She enjoyed playing cards weekly at the Active Aging Resource Center and taking her dogs for golf cart rides around town.  Sue was an animal lover and advocated for their well-being.  She was passionate about taking in rescue dogs and cats. She sure loved her hometown of Gallatin! Sue was an avid sports fan of her Gallatin Bulldogs and Kansas City Chiefs. She was a gifted quilter and created beautiful crochet pieces that she loved to share with others. Sue was kindhearted, generous, sassy, and caring. She was a loyal friend, doting aunt and sister, and an independent woman. Sue will be dearly missed.     

Sue was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors: sister, Jo Ellen (Alan) Read of Kansas City, MO; niece, Katy Read of Kansas City, MO; cousins, other extended family members and many dear friends in the community. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Gallatin First Baptist Church or the KC Pet Project, in care of the funeral home. Private family services due to COVID-19 restrictions. Public services will be held at a later date. Friends may call, 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday April 13th, 2020 at Stith Funeral Home, Gallatin. Burial: Hillcrest Cemetery, Gallatin. ***PUBLIC SERVICES ANNOUNCED*** Memorial services will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, May 15th, 2021 at the First Baptist Church of Gallatin, MO. The family will receive friends one-hour prior to the service at the church.
