Shelby Ray (Gus) Cason passed away peacefully on April 13th 2026 in the comfort of his home in Coggon, Iowa. Born as Gerald LeRoy Fouraker on June 2, 1954, to Nancy Fouraker, Gus was adopted in May 1955 by Leslie R. Cason and Betty Cason (Spurgeon) who gave him his new name.
Gus followed in his father’s footsteps and became a union boilermaker where he found a home and brotherhood with the Boilermakers Local 83. Known for his skill as a rigger, he was comfortable working on the high iron. Gus learned to weld from his union brothers on the job and became part of the first apprenticeship to graduate from his local. As a Journeyman, he specialized in tube welding and ran several jobs. Though health concerns led him to retire at 50, he remained deeply connected to the trade, receiving his 40‑year brotherhood certificate in early 2026.
After his retirement, Gus spent a lot of time fishing, cheering on the Chiefs and Celtics, working in his garden, and caring for his lawn, fondly referred to as “The Kingdom”. Gus was a beloved member of his Community in Coggon, IA, known for his fish fries and his strong appreciation for music, particularly Styx and Nickelback. He always enjoyed asking others about their favorite Nickelback songs and would quickly quote his favorite lyrics in response.
Gus is survived by his two children, Adam Cason of Cedar Rapids, IA and Brandy Cason of Cincinnati OH, as well as three grandchildren Calen Cason, Celayna Cason, and Kerissa Ann Kielkopf.
There will be a casual gathering to celebrate the life of Gus on Friday May 1st 2026 from 5pm-8pm at the Coggon American Legion. Food will be provided.
