Mary Elizabeth Spinar
On Saturday, November 14, 2020, Mary Elizabeth Spinar, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, went to be with our Lord and Savior at the age of 86, while her loving family surrounded her.
Mary was born on Aug. 7, 1934, in Pindall, AR, to James Gonce and Mary (Younger) Gonce-Shouse, and she accepted Christ into her heart at a young age. In 1955, she and Harry Spinar were united in marriage. They raised three daughters, Mary Jane, Sidney, and Ruth Ann, who passed in 1964, and one son, Doyle.
She was a 1952 graduate of Western Grove High School and in 1979, at the age of 45, Mary received her associate’s degree in General Education from Moberly Junior College. She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, MO. Mary worked at Woodbridge and retired as head accountant in 2003.
Mary was a woman with a quick wit and playful sense of humor who made friends wherever she lived, whether in Kansas City (1954), Brodhead, WI (1995) or Polo, MO (2003). She was always ready to help a friend or neighbor, share her famous fried chicken or challenge you to a game of Rummikub. And those who knew Mary will attest that she was a voracious reader and she absolutely loved to treat herself with a chocolate ice cream cone. It goes without saying, but according to her grandchildren, she was the very best grandma and great grandma.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary, her daughter, Ruth Ann, and her siblings, Sarah Fry, Avon Reehm and David Gonce. She is survived by brothers James “Jim” Gonce, Casper, WY, and John Gonce, Denver, CO; sister-in-law Laura Gonce Bertelsen, Las Vegas NV; three children, Mary Jane Spinar, Bishop, CA; Sidney Segar (Junior), Polo, MO; and Doyle Spinar of Point, TX; seven grandchildren, Misty Bolling, Polo, MO; Lyla Norton (Ernie), Polo, MO; Conda Kincaid (Darin), Braymer, MO; Cody Segar, Polo, MO; Emily Spinar, Point, TX; Dakota Spinar, SD; and Houston Spinar, Point, TX; and ten great grandchildren, Abigail, Dalton, Dotty and Bristal Bolling; Landon, Layna, Libby and Elly Norton; and Chase and Wade Kincaid.
When Mary was a child she walked three miles to get to the Greyhound bus stop. In the weeks leading up to her passing, Mary would mention how she wanted to get to the bus so she could go home to see her mom. Mary caught the bus, and she and her mother are reunited once again.
