Obituary of Lois Gene Swofford
Lois Gene Galpin was born October 10, 1930 in Trenton, Missouri to J.P. and Mildred (Whitt) Galpin. She had one younger sister, Shirley. The family moved from Trenton to Gallatin in 1931 in the height of the Great Depression. She graduated in May, 1948 from Gallatin High School, then enrolled at Chillicothe Business Collage. She attended one semester at CBC, but might have had her attention diverted by a handsome young man by the name of Jack Swofford, one year ahead of her in school. Love won out and they were married in December, 1948.
In December, 1951 Jack went into the United States Army. He went to Korea during the Korean Conflict, serving there as a transport patrol. Lois, in the meantime, moved to Kansas City to work as a bookkeeper at the Ford Aircraft Company. Upon Jack’s discharge from the military, the couple moved to Kansas for six months of training for his new employment at Gold Medal Powder Company and then Atlas Powder Company. This employment took the young couple to Minnesota where they had their first child, Sheryl on December 6, 1954. Jack’s promotion took them to Des Moines, Iowa where they welcomed Debra Milynn on June 5, 1957 and John on December 14, 1962. The family moved to Wilmington, Delaware in 1967. When in Wilmington, the family began attending North Baptist Church and Lois accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She enjoyed playing piano for the youth choir at North Baptist. Jack and Lois, both high school graduates, purposed and committed to send their children to college, something they proudly accomplished. Jack’s promotions and employment took them back to Minnesota, Illinois and Texas.
Jack and Lois’ three children are the following: Sheryl (and husband, Stuart of Houston,Texas; Milynn (and husband, Larry of Bishop, Georgia), and John (and wife, Yvonne of Highland Village, Texas). Lois and Jack have the following grandchildren: Garret, Grant, Caroline, Sarah, Emily and Jared, Nick, Chris and Alex round out the grandchildren. Lois also had the following great-grandchildren: Davis, Cameron, Sutton, Trace, Asher, James, Daisy, Sage, Isaac, Julia, Korvos, Cruz, Lola, Ellie and Cal.
Lois had a passion for music, ball room dancing, and line dancing. She and Jack danced in numerous ball room dancing competitions. Her volunteer work and fostering children was a satisfaction in her life. Her greatest joy was her knowledge and assurance that her children had come to know Jesus.
Lois is preceded in death by her husband, her parents and sister.
