Harvey Joseph Hindley, 85, passed away Monday, February 21, 2022, at his daughter’s home in Lathrop, MO from natural causes. Services will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 4, at Iles Grandview Park Chapel in Des Moines, where the family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter with military honors.
Harv was born September 12, 1936, in Centerville, Iowa, to Paul and Pearl (Harvey) Hindley. He married Karen Keller on July 8, 1960. Harv graduated from Centerville and then joined the US Marine Corps and served in Korea for two years. He went to college on the GI Bill at NMSU, now known as Truman University, for his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He later received Masters and Specialist Degrees from Drake University.
Harv started his career as a teacher and coach in Chariton, Iowa. He moved to Nevada where he became a junior high principal for 11 years. Harv became a Superintendent of Schools for Moulton-Udell School District for five years. He also served as Superintendent at Northeast Hamilton School District, retiring in 1994. He then spent nine years teaching at Iowa Central Community College in Ft. Dodge. In his final years after retirement he drove a pre-school bus and for school activities. He was a former member of Lions Club.
Harv enjoyed fishing but his favorite pastime was watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. He also loved to travel and go camping with his wife, Karen all over the United States. Throughout his life, in his free time, Harv could be found painting houses, woodworking, and exercising. He loved playing games with his wife and family.
Harv is survived by his children, Jody (Kevin) Vondrak of Hinton, IA, Paula (Randy) Hartzell of Lathrop, MO, and Mick Hindley of Des Moines, IA; eight grandchildren, Caleb (Brenna) Hartzell, Tyler Hindley, Kole Vondrak, Kyle Vondrak, Josh Hartzell, Drake Hindley, Hannah Hartzell, and Alexandra (Logan) Jurgensmeier; three great-grandchildren, Brody Hartzell, Chloe Hartzell, and Cooper Hartzell; his brother, Tom (Janet) Hindley and his sister-in-law Kathy Maddaleno. He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen McCabe Hindley, his parents, and his siblings, Margaret “Popo” Hindley, Leslie Boylan, Paul Hindley, James Hindley, Elizabeth Trammel, and Tim Hindley.
