George Delbert Hiley, age 91, of Iowa Falls, Iowa and formerly, a longtime resident of Altamont, MO, passed away, Thursday, April 25th, 2024, in Iowa Falls. Delbert was born on July 15, 1932, in Winston, MO, the son of Hobart and Goldie (Kaufman) Hiley. He attended Fairview Country School and graduated from Winston High School in 1950. Delbert served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1954. He began working construction and worked building the Winston High School. He was united in marriage to Joanna Stith on May 28th, 1956, at the Winston Methodist Church and to this union two daughters were born. Delbert worked 32 years for the Missouri Department of Transportation. Following retirement, he worked operating the maintainer for Liberty Township and helped care for Mt. Ayr Cemetery. He raised cattle on the farm south of Altamont. Delbert was a hard worker by nature and was always finding a chore to keep busy. He often could be found eating breakfast at the Winston Truck Stop or the Corner Café in Gallatin and catching up on the latest gossip. His passion was coon hunting; he loved nothing more than following a coon dog trail. Delbert was a man of service and always put his family first and willing to help anyone that needed it. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Delbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joanna; siblings, Edward “Buster” Hiley, Tom Hiley, Marvin Hiley, and Leona Jones and son-in-law, Bill Mastin. He is survived by his daughters, Chretta Mastin of Winston and Bonita (Lynn) Norem of Iowa Falls; grandchildren, Chase (Cassie) Hiley , Cally Mastin, Taylor (Cameron) Lynch, Luke Norem, Lane Carpenter, Channing Norem, and Layten Norem; great-grandchildren, Kaige, Abigail, Olivia and William Hiley and Kollins Lynch; sister, Naomi Kilgore of Independence, MO; brother, Gerald (Janet) Hiley of Bellingham, WA; brother-in-law, Donald Jones of Oroville, CA; sister-in-law, Judy Hiley of Altamont; nieces, nephews and other extended family members also survive.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Mt. Ayr Cemetery. Memorial services will be held at 2 PM, Sunday May 26th, 2024, at Stith Funeral Home in Gallatin. A celebration of life gathering will follow from 3 PM to 5 PM, at Emerald Acres Wedding & Events, Altamont, MO. Private inurnment at Mt. Ayr Cemetery, Altamont.
