Col. James "Jim" Lewis Andrews, DDS passed away June 27, 2021, at the Oakridge nursing facility in Plattsburg Missouri. Jim was born on June 7, 1929, in Canton, Ohio to Gertrude and Lloyd Andrews. He graduated from High School in 1947 and the College of Dentistry at the Ohio State University in 1953. Jim served a twenty-year career as an Oral Surgeon in the Army from 1954 to 1974 retiring with the rank of Colonel. From 1954 through 1961 he was stationed at Fort Knox Kentucky, Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas and Berlin, Germany. From 1961 to 1962 he served at Northwestern University College of Dentistry. From 1964 to 1966, he served as the Assistant Chief of Oral Surgery at Letterman General Hospital in the Presidio, San Francisco. He was stationed in Saigon, Viet Nam from 1965 to 1966 and returned to Letterman General Hospital where he served as the Chief of Oral Surgery through 1968. From 1968 through 1971 he served as the Chief of Dental Services at the 106th General Hospital in Yokohama, Japan. From 1971 to 1974, he served as the Chief of Dental Services at Darnall Army Medical Center in Fort Hood, Texas where he retired from the Army with the rank of Colonel. During his military career, Jim received the Bronze Star, a Meritorious Service Ribbon, a Viet Nam Ribbon, The Presidential Unit Citation, the National Defense Service Ribbon, and the Army Occupational Medal.
Following retirement from the Army Jim served as Professor and Chairman of the Oral Surgery Department at the University of Missouri Kansas City from 1974 through1984. He continued to serve as an Emeritus Professor at the dental school through 1993.
Jim leaves behind his wife Lois, of the home, and one brother Robert Andrews. He had three children, Susan Andrews, Ellen Banks, and David Andrews, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren with his first wife Joanne Jenkins Andrews. After the death of his first wife, he married Mary Lou White and helped raise her three children, Laurie Bergman, Mike White, and John White. He has two grandchildren through this marriage. Jim has been married to Lois Eames of Lathrop since 1987 where he has become part of Lois’ family, including three daughters, Martha Martin, Marian Harris, and Susan Parman, six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Jim was an Elder and board member of the First Christian Church of Lathrop. He served on the Board of the Regional Solid Waste Program, was a member of the Lathrop Rotary Club and the Lathrop American Legion. He was a Mason for more than sixty years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Lathrop First Christian Church in care of the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Friday, July 2nd, 2021 at the Lathrop First Christian Church. The family will receive friends one-hour prior to the service at the church.
