Byron "Barney" Martin - age 86 of Lathrop, MO passed away Wednesday afternoon, August 14, 2024, at his home in Lathrop with his wife of 63 years at his side. Barney was born on July 11, 1938, the son of Byron Thomas and Pauline (Hisel) Martin in Cowgill, MO. He was a 1956 graduate of Lathrop High School. Barney married the love of his life, Sarah McGinnis on June 10th, 1961, at the First Baptist Church of Lathrop. He was a faithful member of the Baptist Church since 1959 and served as a Deacon for nearly 40 years. In addition to serving as a Deacon, Barney also drove the church bus for many seasons, helped in the kitchen at Grand Oaks Church Camp, and mowed the church property. He began working at the young age of 12, driving a hay truck for McGinness Farms. Barney would go on to show cattle for Bob McGinness, traveling across the country with their prized Charolais cattle. Later he become a diesel mechanic at Mid-American Truck Lines, and then Consolidated Freightways, where he worked for over 30 years. Barney’s work was top notch as a mechanic, earning him the title of Employee of the Year for the company. After retiring, he joined his friend Bob Brown in farming and rehabbing homes. He was always ready to help anyone in need. From fixing vehicles, mowing lawns, repairing homes, to giving rides to doctor appointments, Barney never steered away from helping others. His faith in the Lord was very evident, and over the years he led many people to God. He instilled that same love for God in his children and taught them to go to the Lord in prayer in times of trouble. Barney delivered meals on wheels for over 35 years, passing that tradition down to his children and grandchildren. He could fix and make anything, and always had the right tool. Barney was also a member of the Lathrop Antique Car Club for many years. He enjoyed fishing with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed cruising the streets of Lathrop with family in his golf cart. Barney was a huge supporter of his children and grandchildren and especially enjoyed supporting them in sports. He loved cheering on the Chiefs and celebrating any occasion with family every time he got the chance. He was a wonderful father and husband. He was kind and patient and loved his family fiercely. Barney was a true servant of God, family and community. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
