Shirley Ann (McHenry) Smith Obituary

Shirley Ann (McHenry) Smith, age 95 of Macon, MO and formerly of Kansas City, MO passed away Monday morning, August 26th, 2019 at Samaritan Hospital in Macon, MO. Shirley was born on November 12th, 1923 the daughter of Irvin Albertus and Marguerite (Madison) McHenry in Mabel, MO.  She attended Mt. Pleasant School for one year until her family moved to Rice, KS.  There, she and her sister attended District 30 School, and then Concordia High School until her junior year when the family moved back to Mabel.  Shirley graduated from Cameron High School in 1941.  She worked for Vaughn’s Grocery in King City, MO and Hyde’s Grocery and Hale’s Grocery in Cameron, MO, earning money to further her education.  On June 6th, 1944 she entered Huff Business School, which was located on the Plaza in Kansas City.  After graduation, Shirley worked for accountants and eventually became a bookkeeper for several firms over the years. She was an accountant her whole career and was especially proud to serve as accountant for the architectural firms Kivett & Meyer and Howard Needles Tammen & Bergendorff when they designed Kansas City International Airport, Kauffman Stadium, and Arrowhead Stadium. She retired from the HNTB firm in Kansas City in 1983.

On December 28th, 1947 Shirley was united in marriage to Roger K. Smith in Mabel, MO. During their 51 years of marriage they enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, and were able to travel extensively after they both retired.  Shirley transferred her membership to First Christian Church in Macon from Hillside Christian Church in Kansas City. She enjoyed her membership in the Association of Business and Professional Women in Kansas City, and along with Roger she was a life member of the Midwest Chapter of the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division.  After retirement, Shirley visited her grandchildren as often as possible, spoiling them as a loving grandmother does. Shirley enjoyed anything that involved numbers, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, games, and cards-especially Solitaire.  She was an avid reader and curious about the larger world.  She kept up with current events, reading newspapers and magazines from cover to cover.  She started using an iPad at 88 years old and she eagerly looked for pictures and news of her family and friends on Facebook.  Some of her FaceTime connections would occasionally go awry because her fingers just had to touch the children’s faces on the screen. She will be dearly missed by her loving family.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Virginia Faulkner.  Survivors include: daughter, Marilyn (Winston) Simpson of Clarence, MO; grandson, Guy (Steffi) Simpson of Göcklingen, id Pfalz, Germany; granddaughter, Amy (Thomas) Owen of Murfreesboro, TN; great-grandchildren: Annmarie, Keeley, Samuel, Justin; nephew, David (Donna) Campbell of Mulvane, KS ;  nephew, Richard (Lynette) Campbell of Abilene, KS; niece, Beckie (Wayne) Whittier of New Braunfels, TX; nephew, William Jacoby of Wichita, KS; nephew, Charles (Molly) Jacoby of Wichita, KS; sister-in-law, Wanda Jacoby of Wichita; four cousins and other extended family.
